The Most Important Skill You Can Develop For Yourself Now

As the world unlocks and people begin to settle into the reality of the new scheme of things, a lot of emphases have been laid on the new economy.

Many teachers, trainers, and tutors have tried to equip people in their spheres of influence with the skills that will be needed to keep them afloat in the new world.

First off, we would be lying to ourselves if we try to pull any stunt that turns blind eyes to the fact that the world has changed. In light of this, it is necessary that we learn how we will be able to navigate the new ‘normal,’ and live our lives to the fullest.

Because of this reality, a lot of workshops have been held. Many training sessions have gone down and all around, people are being equipped with the SKILLS OF THE NEW WORLD.

While all these skills that have been taught are very vital and have their roles to play in re-establishing order in our lives, take a look at this.

If I asked you right now to make a list of the skills you know that are vital in the new world, you will most likely list these out.

Writing; copywriting, content writing, etc.

Communication skills.

Management skills (distraction management, human resource management, project management, etc.)

The list is endless, and as a matter of fact, it keeps growing every day as we try to navigate this new world.

While these skills are very useful and will play a major part in business and the corporate world, individuals who are looking to get up and move on in this new world may be at a loss for how to get started.

Even as you add the aforementioned skills to your bucket list of things to learn, please learn this skill and ace the course.

I call it the skill of CONTEXTUALIZATION.

Before you get scared by the big name, walk with me and let me show you something in the next few lines.

If you studied mathematics or physics in high school, you will be aware of the way things work in these subjects.

The teacher introduces a new concept and gives the formula to go with it. Using that formula, he works on a few examples in class, and you are left with questions to test whether or not you have gotten a grip on the topic for the day.

You are expected to take the formula given to you and sometimes toy with it by deriving new formulas from the one given. With these new formulas you can then begin to work on the questions you were given.

Your final grade will come as a result of how well you understood what was taught, and whether or not you were able to apply the knowledge you got from your teacher in solving the problems before you.

Let us bring this home.

The word was coined from the word CONTEXT.

This can also be extended to the phrase “to apply context to something.”

It means extracting knowledge from another scenario and applying it to your own situation now.

This is the only way that all you will learn will be useful to you.

So, when next you attend a class, read a book or engage in a meaningful conversation that can change your life, do not just look for nuggets that will make you sound 'smart' on social media, rather apply this skill I am talking about right here.

Find out exactly HOW what is being discussed relates to you, and immediate action steps you can take so you can begin to see the results you intend to see.

Contextualization is all about taking what you have learned from any source, subjecting it to the critical fires of your brain where it is processed, and then finding parallels between that new piece of value and your life/business right now.

It is about taking knowledge from a source and adapting this knowledge to solve your needs now.

The million-dollar question now is how then do you achieve this?

These few strategies should help you get started on the right track.

When next you interact with fresh content or come across anything that should help you on some level, do not be quick to take notes or jot down points. Rather, ask yourself the following questions.

1.  Is there something I can learn from the person whose content I am interacting with right now? (This knowledge will eliminate doubts, and let you know if you are in the right place or not).

2. What new knowledge am I gaining from this session?

(This way, you are reassured that you are not wasting your time).

3. What is the relationship between the knowledge I am gaining right now and my life?

(This way, you begin to find the connections that exist between your life and the knowledge you are gaining).

4. How can I apply this new knowledge I am gaining to my life right now?

(The answers you will get from here should give you action points that will help you begin taking the right action).

5. What should I stop doing as a result of the knowledge I have gotten right now.

(This will help you put the action points you have now gotten into perspective).

6. What should I start doing to ensure that what I have learned will not go to waste again?

(Once again, clear action steps)…

Dear you, I hope this long epistle has made some sort of sense to you.

In the new world, we must be able to find connections and draw inferences from the reasonable content we interact with on a daily basis. This way, we know we are positioned for impact, influence, and expansion.

With this new knowledge at your fingertips, please start taking action.
